Jambo! We’ve just arrived at the UAACC (United African Alliance Community Center) after an incredible, breathtaking week in the bush. I still can’t believe how many incredible experiences were packed into one week, it’ll be tough to sum in up in a single blog post! Day One: Maasai Steppe After driving down scenic roads lined with sunflowers and secluded villages in our open safari vehicles, we reached our first campsite in the Maasai Steppe. We were surprised to see tents already assembled and a campfire with chairs for each of us arranged around it. As soon as we got situated, Maggie (our amazing guide) led us to the nearby Maasai boma, which is essentially a small village with homes of the nomadic tribe, surrounded by a fence to protect the community and their livestock from predators. We were greeted with open arms by the Maasai, and immediately felt at home as they guided us through their community. The most notable moments in the village were the conversations we had with Maasai elders while sitting in their homes, holding baby goats, and attempting to milk cows. Needless to say, our first experience with the Maasai and on safari was eye-opening and fantastic. Day Two: Maasai Steppe We woke up in the beautiful landscape and embarked on a walking safari, where we learned all about wildlife in East Africa. Later, the Maasai men performed a traditional song and dance in celebration of two students’ birthdays. Day Three: Maasai Steppe On the third day we hiked up Oldonyo-Sambu, a mountain located in the Maasai Steppe. It took a few hours, but our hard work was rewarded by the spectacular view of the land. Later that evening, we sat around the campfire with Maasai elders and had the rare opportunity to have a conversation about the differences between our cultures. Their culture is so different than anything we’d ever experienced, and it was so enlightening to not only hear about it, but to make the connection by experiencing their lifestyle first-hand. Day Four: Tarangire National Park On day four we went on our first game drive through Tarangire National Park. I still can’t believe how

many elephants, zebras, and giraffes we encountered! No big cats yet… Day Five: Karatu, Outside of the Ngorongoro Crater We awoke to the sounds of distant animals in Tarangire National Park, and after a morning game drive, we headed to a new campsite outside of Ngorongoro Crater. Once at the campsite, we were overjoyed to learn that there were hot showers, and could barely contain our excitement for the following day in the crater. Day Six: Ngorongoro Crater Once we arrived in the crater, we were almost immediately greeted by the animal we wanted to see most: LIONS. This started the day on a great note, and we got to see and photograph awe-inspiring animals from a very short distance. We finished the day with a visit from local Iraqw (another tribe in Tanzania), who answered questions and then had us join in for
